Vasco Viana was born in 1980 and graduated in Cinema - Image and Script from E.S.T.C. (School of Theater and Cinema) in 2005.
His work as Director of Photography gained notoriety with Arena, the fiction short film by João Salaviza, winner of the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2009. His work was again recognized in Rafa, another award-winning short film by João Salaviza, this time with the Golden Bear at the Berlin Festival 2012. The collaboration with Salaviza also resulted in recognition by the International Cinematographers' Film Festival Manaki Brothers, a festival dedicated to cinematography, where he wins the prize for best photography for the film Montanha in 2015.
Since then he has been working in fiction films, documentaries, television series, advertising films and music videos with relevant national directors such as: Pedro Pinho, Carlos Conceição, Leonor Noivo, Mariana Gaivão, Vasco Saltão, Gonçalo Waddington and Filipa Reis. He also collaborated with international directors such as Madhi Fleifel, Andrey Paounov, Dekel Berenson and the Laperrousaz sisters.
In 2019 he debuted his first film, the documentary “Batida de Lisboa”, co-directed with Rita Maia wich, having premiered at IndieLisboa, received the Indie Music award in the 2019 edition, and since then continues to travel the circuit of national and international film festivals, notably having been the opening film at the Festival dei Popoli in Florence.
